Wyndham’s Theatre, London (update)

Wyndham’s Theatre, Charing Cross Road, London, WC2H 0DA

I am re-reviewing Wyndhams, as they have changed the wheelchair area and I don't think they have improved it.

We knew we had to enter via a special way into the Box in the Stalls. Wheelchair Access is available only into the box in the Stalls via a wheelchair lift.  The lift can accommodate standard size electric wheelchairs, up to 500kg in weight. The lift is 46 x 31 inches. There is also a small set of steps for those not in wheelchairs.

The box is small and accommodates four people and previously access was only via the way we came in. No one else able to enter the box, as entrance was straight from the street. However, now the front has been removed and anyone can enter to use the Accessible Toilet. This means someone has to move their seat in this very small box, either a wheelchair has to move or a companion has to physically move their seat. It is very difficult at best.

Even worse,  when wheelchair users are attempting to leave via the wheelchair lift,  people wanting to avoid the queuing to get out of the theatre walk in the box and start going up the steps.

There are some improvements, which is a change in the toilet that has made it slightly move accessible and it is easier to visit the bar, although it is either up or down stairs, so not accessible.  There is no longer an Access Host to provide them.

The Accessible Box is at the back of the stalls and has a great view.

Sadly, these changes are anything but an improvement.

The changes have fundamentally made it more difficult for someone with Access requirements.

This was previously rated as 9/10

I would now only rate it as 5/10
